The Longshoremen’s Noon ~ A Painting by John George Brown

The Longshoremen’s Noon (1879) by John George Brown

John George Brown (1831-1913) was an American painter born in England. His 1879 painting The Longshoremen’s Noon represents a casual gathering of longshoremen on the Hudson River wharf. Brown’s rendering of dockworkers engaged in casual conversation emphasizes their social relationships instead of the drudgery of their labor.
