This painting sets up a series of visual contradictions between appearance and reality, intended by Italian Renaissance painter Raphael to reflect the unrest of a period of turmoil for the papacy. Leo X had recently come under fire for selling “indulgences” to fund Saint Peter’s Cathedral.
